Journal 6.0: Psychology is spellbinding

Psychology has always been my subject of interest. Today I went onto the www.open2study.com website (A website that provides free on line courses from various universities in Australia). There was this course called 'Foundations of Psychology' and so I enrolled my name. Next, I made a CAS proposal and got the required signatures. Both the CAS coordinator and the DP coordinator liked the idea of doing an on line course.

I got back home and couldn't wait to log in. I began with the first module. The course comprises of 4 modules: each contains 10 videos, 10 quizzes and one final assessment. Since the course officially began on the 21st of March '16, I had to catch up with whatever had been covered. So I finished module 1 in a span of 2 hours today.

I learned about the subject matter of psychology, a thought experiment, 'the mind-body problem' and the basics of the nervous system. The learning process was fun and not stressful at all, as there was an option to look at the videos again and repeat the pop quiz if you're not happy with the grades!. However, there were a few complicated words to remember and so i kept a notebook by my side to take down running notes.

Journal 5.0: Awareness Campaign

The natural air purification project, was initially with the idea of selling plants to our guests in the coming school fest. But at the eleventh hour, we decided upon keeping an awareness campaign instead. We thought we'll begin with placing plants around our DP-block (including teacher's cabins) and later taking that step of selling them to the parents. For this we created an Eco-club. Students interested are mostly from the slot who were in the food stall .
Once this idea kicked in, we made a new proposal and got it signed by the CAS and DP coordinator.

We researched about the benefits of plants as natural air purifiers. With all the information collected about plants, we got everybody together and designed attractive posters. Printouts conaining information about each plant (basically, the benefits) were taken.
This time not everyone seemed that very regarded, yet we took it forward with a little hope.

As parents started arriving, we split ourselves, went in pairs with the benefits sheet plus a remarks sheet and began explaining to parents. But before that we didn't forget to ask them if we could borrow five minutes of their time.

My talk went on like this: “In today's world, air pollution is a pressing issue, as we all know. We wouldn't realise now but we do not know what the bad quality of the air is doing to our health and how it would worsen it in the coming few years if we do not be aware and take care. On this note, I am going to introduce you to these certain special plants that purify the air. Currently, artificial air purifiers like, 'aero guard' are being sold at high costs (almost 15,000/-!). However, these plants, altogether, are sold at around 1400/-, only and they are better at this job. They absorb toxic chemicals and allergens like dust, so people with dust allergies or lung problems can benefit from them.
One such plant like Adiantum, absorbs radiation from computers and printers. This is something we require in the present generation as technology is developing and we use it frequently to make life easier!
Above all, they look beautiful when displayed in your home (they are all indoor plants).
For further details you can contact us on our email id. Thankyou.

Every parent filled in the remarks/feedback sheet and I was happy to know that they liked our presentation (we were very informative).

It was a great experience, as we got to learn about different names of plants and so much about what they can do. I developed the skill of interacting with people and sharing knowledge.

Journal+reflection 4.0: Video call - intercultural programme

One of my friend, met this women, Mrs. Margarita, in Europe, who lives in Sweden and is an English teacher there. A few months back we had a video conference with 5 of her students in school through Skype, interacting with each other, talking about our cultures and so on. Basically an intercultural programme.
Today we did the same thing, but this time she had 40 students from her side whilst we were 4! Our supervisors were CAS coordinator Mr. Rolf and English Head of Department, Mrs. Elizabeth

Before we could begin, we jotted down a list of questions to ask the students, took a diary and pen (to take notes) and set ourselves in our school's conference room (we actually felt like professionals!). Technicalities were handled by the IT department.
Initially, we started off with introducing ourselves to them. Next followed the exchange of questions.

Our side: “What makes you choose to learn English?”
Their side: “We're forced to do it!. We have no choice”
Our side: *We see them wearing jeans (influence of the Western culture)*.
What do you do at your spare times?
Their side: Party, music and other hobbies.
Our side: Same. How do you celebrate birthdays?
Their side: Sing a song for the birthday boy/girl (christmas tune).
*They begin singing for us in Swedish*
Our side: *Clapping*. When was your culture influenced by the Western culture?
Their side: When our parents were small. So we are used to it now.
Our side: Do you watch English films?
Their side: Subtitles are there, so it is made a bit easier to understand.
Our side: Are boys and girls treated equally in your school? (question asked when boys were not around)
Their side: Interesting question! But no, we're not treated equally. Boys take up more space in class!
How is it like in your school?
Our side: *Laughs* We are treated equally. You see, all of us even wear the same kind of uniform!

........and the conversation went on (about festivals, holidays, marriages etc..).
They too asked several questions. Both sides seemed equally curious!

This 45 minutes was an engaging and a fun experience for each one of us. We definately learned quite a bit about their lifestyle, also, were all happy to exchange the facts and information.
Afterall, knowledge is a powerful weapon!

Reflection 3: What it all felt like..

Pre-reflection:
I thought this experience would not only bring out but also improvise our talent and skill of setting up, organizing and managing a food stall. It'll make us better thinkers and doers. We all will realise that: together we can do anything to make it successful and team work and spirit is essential.

Post-reflection:
This journey helped us discover the importance of working in team.
During the preparatory part of the process, we learned to be open minded; accept different view points and become balanced; once decided upon the menu, we had to look at how we must equally look at the quantity and quality of the food, what parents will prefer, what children will prefer, keep appropriate alternatives and so on. We acquired creative and innovative skills when it came to making the posters/banners and dish descriptions in the menu, also, we got to experience how buying and selling actually goes about.
We learnt to keep a good relationship with our guests (be polite) and be patient when anything was not going the way we wanted it to because later we knew there was a bright side to it.
Now my reflexes have become better since service happened for a continuous couple of hours; Time of reaction had to be pretty quick as the orders kept coming in a row.
On an ending note I would like to say that our supervisors who kept encouraging us, were very supportive. They mentioned that 'For you students this was the first time for putting up a food stall and for this first time, it was a great job!' At the end of the day, we were happy we achieved something (compliments plus a profit of 25k!). This was a fruitful step that taught me all of the above and boosted my confidence to take up further projects like this.
I know, we all know that together we can take this to new heights.

Journal 3.4: "CAFE INFINITO" in ACTION!

The big day had finally arrived! Preparation for the food stall resumed, with a BANG! At 7:00am we collected the vadapavs and puris from where we had ordered it and payed the remaining amount.
At 8:00 when we reached school, I saw that the hostel-ites on the team had begun working; lemonade making and cheese grating. All the food items I got was transferred from the car to the kitchen by us whilst we got a vessel to drop in all the ice-cream, crushed oreos and milk for the shake.

Simultaneously I went to check on the lemonade and kept tasting it every time we had to alter it (same for the shake). Then, I emptied a packet of ketchup into the dispenser. Next, the badges that I made were taken out from my bag along with scissors and cello tape and stuck on every teammate's shirt on the left side, by me. They loved the idea!

Afterward, I went out the cafeteria, toward the stall to keep a check on that too. We began transporting the huge & heavy utensils and carton boxes from the kitchen to the stall area. First, it was the oreo milkshake that two of us poured in the plastic glasses, followed by two again, storing it in the refrigerator, then it was the lemonade. Plates, spoons, tissue papers were all arranged. Meanwhile I put up the posters that I made. Anything extra (food and cups) were kept below the tables.

It was startling to see everyone so brisk and active on a saturday morning after sleeping at around 1 in the night!

Anyway, the next task was making the pani puris, pouring the pani in the cup, setting it on the thermo-plates and laying them on the table while also covering it with tissue paper or another plate itself (too many flies, ew!). Same thing was followed for vadapav, watermelon, gulab jamun and mad angle chat.

A a little bit of everything was displayed just so we do not delay in serving the parents and/or making them wait.
Almost set, we assembled together and discussed how it's all going to go about. One of the main member who had to get the billing software working, hadn't turned up yet and so we all got worried since he didn't pick our call too.

I noticed parents arriving one by one. Rushing to get the menu printouts, I discovered that I was already sweating and tired. The prices had to be written down by me on all copies.
At first itself there were about 8 people asking and waiting for their orders! Service had to be really quick, I helped all 3 counters in the service part. A while later I also went at the back of the stall to make and keep anything (pani puri) that was over on the table or fill new plates and cups with the other items.

Meanwhile the MC was announcing our menu and tempting the audiences' taste buds (I suppose).

As minutes flew, the confusion and scrambling intensified. In the process I dropped sauce on the floor, someone else knocked down the mad angle chat that was set in cups, blasted one another in the turmoil and what not! 11 o'clock was the peak time at which our sales hit the maximum!
In the midst of it all, one of the parent approached me to share something. Immediately I attended him. He said, “I would suggest you not to make use of plastic or thermo cups from next time on, as they are not bio-degradable and hence not eco-friendly. I replied with a smile, “Yes, sir, definately”.
One of the teammate and I decided with the others to go the audience, selling cupcakes and so they agreed. We sold almost 60 cupcakes and earned 3000/-!. This information was to be given to the accounts area, where it was updated in the software.

The time I went behind the stall to check for any stock updates, I noticed litter strewn across the place. Whilst picking up the waste, I asked two others to help out, and we dumped it in the trash can.

I had already gone twice, with my transport partner to the kitchen, to get big hot boxes of watermelon to the stall. One of my friend at the stall and I had one phone each, to contact each other and collaborate, to check stocks whilst I was at the kitchen to transport the items from there to the stall for updation. Watermelon and lemonade were selling the most due to the scorching heat.
I didn't feel like taking a break though we were all on our toes past quite some time now.
We altered the prices yet again according to the sales.

The morning session ended in a stretch. It was time to clean up the place and set the stall for the second batch! My partner and I took care of what has to be updated in our stall. Glasses, cups, spoons and hot boxes were transferred from the kitchen by us. Finally, I took a 5 minute break.

Excitement and tension was wide awake, within. Together we re-filled the refrigerator and plates while parents made their way! Some teammates had to leave and so I had to replace their service area too. One of us thought of making the watermelon pieces into juice, to sell even better.

Until 5:00pm, sales were minimal. Spirits were draining bit by bit. Moreover, I was upset looking at the ample amount of food, predicting it would go for a huge waste.
Nonetheless, it was time to barge into the audience and begin marketing. Quite some money was earned. That needed some skill and patience to repeatedly take trays of different items every half hour to the audience, convincing them to buy it off. We came up with the idea of making combos. Making appropriate combos, the prices were further reduced for one or two items and the MC was asked to make the announcement when there was any addition or change in the dishes of the stall.
Coke and pani puri were sold out.

From 7:30 as the program was coming to an end, parents started walking down from the gallery, few coming towards where the stall was while few going the other route. With some presence of mind, we divided ourselves accordingly. Most went to exit area, with a little bit of everything in hand and the rest few, including me were taking care of service in the stall. Sales boomed rapidly while it got back the beam on our faces. Watermelon juice was getting sold even at this time!
What was left? - vadapav, sandwich, cupcake and gulab jamun. We hurrayed to ourselves when we heard that our earning had reached an approximate of 69,000/-!

It was time to clean up and pack up. We did just that and cleared everything; extra food was distributed to the domestic helpers and drivers (this was time I was most glad).

Ms. Nivea and Mr.Murugesan were our supervisors who greatly helped us, throughout. They were more than happy and proud of us. Above all, we were. Of what I saw, everyone did a wonderful job!

Journal 3.3: Making the purchase, refining the menu

Today's task was buying all of the alloted items for the stall. I placed an order for 300 vadapavs at this place called Goli vadapavs, with my friend, for which the advance had to be paid then and there. Vadapavs was alloted for me and pani puri for her. There was a different method of heating it (taking out the patty seperatly and heating for 10 seconds) and so the manager of the shop taught it to me immediately, just so it doesn't become too chewy). Next, we placed an order at the pani puri stall next to Goli vadapavs.

Once that was settled, I re-checked what everyone else has to buy and sent them a final document of the name and quantity, respectively.

Afterwards, when I looked at the menu, the item list looked too plain and so I edited it with some other creatively different (I thought so!) name each.

A few teachers and students didn't like 2-3 names and recommended a change. It made me a little upset, however I realised that in the process I must learn to accept a global perspective as well, if it's for the good. Necessary editing was done (catchy descriptions were added).

Journal 3.2: Getting geared up!

The minute it struck 12 we scurried out our classroom in the urge to start our work for tomorrow. Firstly, we got all the materials from the store to design our banner that says “CAFE INFINITO”! I began writing it out as most of them liked my font/handwriting, then few others joined in to help paint the text in a different technique that I suggested. Meanwhile, few went around putting up the printed menu list in different areas of our campus.
In the process of mixing the colors to get new ones (as we had a limited number) one of us spilt some on the banner! We left it on hold. Whatever paint was left on our hands, it was smeared on each one's faces and we laughed (like a 5-10 min break).

Next we went to the kitchen to start 'oreo crushing' for the oreo milkshake. Big vessels and gloves were provided from school's kitchen and oreoes were brought by one of us. The back of a tumbler would be a good tool to crush them, however, later we discovered that our hands were enough! The vessel was sealed and stored.

I then went back to the stall area to redo the banner. With the help of two others I hung one of the banners. Eventually, we finalized on the deals from our school's kitchen and decided to freeze on each one's roles. There was this billing software designed, proudly by two teammates, that was apparently a new entry to school. So they showed up a demo to the co-ordinator of how they will go about managing it. I was to take up the transporting and service area. (leaving the accounts, everything else, basically). We left home after a proper plan.

At home I made a half kg packet of pani (for pani puri), tasted and then altered it a little. Afterwards, the idea of badges striked my mind, and so I made 16 badges that each says 'Cafe Infinito, followed by the respective name, at your service!'. Twice I designed it but the third time only satisfied me. Keeping it aside, I made two posters that each tell a quote about food! Everything was ready for tomorrow.
